Omnom Chocolate started in Reykjavík, Iceland in 2013. Sustainability, social justice, and environmentalism are big focuses of the company, and the founders are deeply impacted by the unique geology and ecosystem of Iceland. Omnom strives for a baroque and minimalist aesthetic that is inspired by fantastical creatures, surrealism, pop art, and contemporary Nordic architectural design.
About the Bar
Product Description: Black chocolate flavoured with toasted and puffed barley and lava salt.
Ingredients: White chocolate (Cocoa butter, cane sugar, Icelandic barley, roasted barley malt, barley malt extract, sea salt, colour (activated charcoal), emulsifier (sunflower lecithin)), Icelandic popped barley, glazing agent (glucose syrup, stabiliser (E414), vegetable oil (sunflower), lactic acid (E 270)), sealing agent (ethyl alcohol, shellac (E904), vegetable oil (coconut)).
Review of Chocolate
General Thoughts
I love that this bar is made in Iceland, and you can definitely sense the influences that the country has on the company and the chocolate. The packaging is super slick, visually appealing, and evokes an almost metal music aesthetic.
Sight
The bar is a super dark black color studded with black barley all over the bottom. The barley is slightly embedded into the chocolate, but it comes off easily and there was a fair amount of loose barley in the package.
Sound
The chocolate has a decent snap relatively speaking but other bars have a stronger snap.
Smell
There is a vegetal, earthy smell that has a deep, almost roasted coffee foundation.
Taste
The taste starts out salty due to the lava salt, but then moves into a combination of tangy sour and sweet flavor supplemented by an earthiness that comes the barley. The flavor does linger for a while, but it is a good flavor so I did not mind.
Mouthfeel
I expected the barley to be very crunchy and rough, but it was actually more chewy like a damp puffed rice cereal. The general mouthfeel was extremely warm with a creamy pungency that brought out the flavors in the chocolate and barely.
Conclusions
This was a really unique bar that surprised me. The taste and mouthfeel are almost indescribable, but overall was very delicious. I would strongly recommend it and would definitely purchase it again!
